The collapse of Surgo Construction, a contractor with nearly a century of history in the North East, serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly pressures can mount in today’s construction sector. Working alongside FRP Advisory, we at Lucas Ross continue to unravel the factors behind Surgo’s change from administration to liquidation to ensure a fair and transparent process for creditors, employees, and stakeholders.
A Company Under Strain
Despite a turnover of £14.4m in its last filed accounts, Surgo’s margins were incredibly thin, generating a pre-tax profit of just £74,488. Beneath the surface, significant financial pressures were building. Prolonged disputes, initially on a school project and subsequently a complex payment dispute with Bellway Homes, severely strained cash flow. Bellway’s subsequent winding-up petition, following a court judgment ordering Surgo to pay £1.1m, accelerated the company’s decline.
Simultaneously, Surgo had undertaken a major project for a charitable organisation that ultimately defaulted on the £1.4m owed. Once the charity’s trustees were declared bankrupt, recovery options became extremely limited. These events, compounded by wider construction sector headwinds, created a deficit from which Surgo could not recover.
Our Role:
When Surgo entered administration, 46 employees were immediately affected and work ceased across eight live sites. As the case moves into liquidation, we continue to scrutinise:
- The timing and value of pre-administration property transfers
- The conduct of former directors
- The accuracy of historical financial reporting
- The true beneficial ownership of assets
- The broader chain of events contributing to the company’s insolvency
Our work remains rooted in our core principles: clarity, accountability, fairness, and evidence-based decision-making.
Supporting Stakeholders Through Uncertainty
Our joint responsibilities include assessing ongoing project positions and supporting former employees with their claims to the Redundancy Payments Service. These individuals, and the many creditors affected, deserve a process that is thorough, transparent, and professionally managed.
Surgo’s collapse is not an isolated incident. It reflects the systemic pressure many contractors face from tightening margins, rising costs, delayed payments, and sector volatility.
Early engagement and open communication are essential. Businesses experiencing financial distress should seek professional advice sooner rather than later. Intervention at the right moment can change the trajectory entirely.
At Lucas Ross, we remain committed to working collaboratively, investigating rigorously, and guiding stakeholders through even the most complex and sensitive situations.
If your organisation is facing challenges, or if you require clarity on your options, we are here to help.
